Voltage Tester
There a
number of ways to test the voltage, which includes the use of a digital
multimeter and oscilloscope, however in many conditions, a quick test needs to
be run to see if there is voltage is the wire or if the wire is live without
knowing the exact readings. A voltage tester or sometimes also called test-pen,
serves this purpose. It makes use of a conductor rod/tip, a high resistance,
and a Led indicator, which turns ON in case if the wire is live and the user
body as a path to the ground.
To test,
place the tip of the tester on the screw or bare point of connection. If the
connection is live or hot, the tester glows. In case if the light doesn’t glow,
the connection turns out to be faulty. There are other types of tester
available with probes or contactless tips, but the general setup is the same
for all.
Advantage Over
DMM
One key
advantage of a voltage tester over a digital multimeter is that if there is a
disconnection or the path is broken, the DMM would show a zero reading; however,
the voltage tester would glow at the broken point indicating a live wire.
Fluke is a renowned
brand that provides a series of non-contact test pens. The famous 1AC contact
less pen can measure voltage range from 90v to 1000V.
